About Us

Since 2011 Family Gateway (formerly Tyne Gateway) has been supporting whole families who are living in poverty or disadvantage due to their circumstance, location and home environment.

The aim is to ensure that parents, children and young people have an improved life chance and opportunities to live their best life.

Following on from the successful Child Poverty Unit Innovation pilot, we enhanced and developed our Barefoot Professional model which employs local people who have experienced and overcome the same or similar issues as those we support. We train them to offer bespoke packages of whole family support to deliver sustainable change in their own communities across the North East. All members of staff are fully trained in a range of professional areas, including safeguarding.

Our aim is to improve life chances for children and young people. We achieve our outcomes by building resilience and stability in the family home, working with the whole family through issues including:

We work alongside the range of professional services that are there to help families, but that often don’t have the capacity to work with them or have so far failed to encourage them to accept support. The families we help are often referred to as ‘hard to reach’, meaning that they do not easily engage with professional services through fear or stigma and are therefore often missing that professional help they need. We can either offer that whole package of support or we can often be the ‘bridge’ to more specialist services.

What We Do

Because our staff have lived experience of the issues we’re addressing, our most important ingredient is the ability to engage and build trust

We offer practical and intensive support, and we empower the whole family to develop the confidence and resilience to move forward themselves.

We assess each family’s needs and work with them to prioritise the areas that need to be addressed.

We often train people who have made significant changes as volunteers and, in some cases, as employed members of staff.
