Ways to Donate to Charity
You can help children and families living in poverty in North East England by making a charitable donation to support Family Gateway today.
For many of our families life just sucks. They have been dealt an unfortunate hand and they just seem to go from one crisis and disappointment to another.
COVID-19 is really tough for everyone, but next time we complain about missing that cappuccino and night out in town, maybe we should count our blessings and remember that for so many families and children, life has been tough for years – it just got a little bit more unbearable.
We’re so grateful to everyone who’s helped us throughout this coronavirus crisis – thank you so much! We’re providing nutritious, hot, free meals to our families who need them, and we couldn’t send as many without your fantastic support.
- £4 provides a family with one hot evening meal;
- £10 will give them three hot meals a week;
- £30 means we can cook, package and deliver healthy family meals for three weeks of lockdown!
Donate to Family Gateway
Your donation will help us to change the lives of low income families and those in poverty in North and South Tyneside, and Northumberland who struggle every day with issues such as severe debt, substance abuse, unemployment, domestic abuse, poor housing conditions, mental and physical ill-health and child neglect.
Your donation will enable us to provide specialist outreach and support programmes to help families to break the cycle of poverty and improve life chances for children.

Where Your Donation Goes
Every donation will go towards supporting our charitable work with children and families in the North East:
- £5 would buy new underwear for children who go to school with old or second hand underwear and vests and socks.
- £10 would buy a duvet for a child that is sleeping with only single sheets and old, scratchy blankets.
- £15 would buy a warm coat for a child who has nothing.
- A standing donation of between £5 and £20 per month would pay for holiday and after-school activities for children to help them access new experiences they’d otherwise be unable to afford.
Donations from our supporters make it possible for us to help people like Jane:
“Before Family Gateway I was in a dark fog and life seemed pointless and I only carried on for my kids. I was drinking too much after my husband was killed and I lived hour to hour.”
“Family Gateway really listened to me and treated me like a human being with feelings. They took the time and let me express my feelings without feeling stupid. They understood. They came down to my level and didn’t judge me.”
“Family Gateway supported me to access benefits I wasn’t aware I could get, they helped me sort out a budget and encouraged me when I was trying to curb my drinking. I am now volunteering for Family Gateway and feel less isolated and lost.”
“My children are slowly recovering and I am now able to help them to get their lives back. I feel more hopeful for our future and have regained a purpose to getting up every morning. Some days are still bad but these are becoming less frequent. Thank you Family Gateway.”

What to Donate
Family Gateway’s latest appeal is asking the local community to come together and help light up Christmas for local families living in poverty in the North East by donating gifts and Christmas decorations.
Our appeal is calling for donations of trees, Christmas lights, tinsel, baubles, and presents to put under the tree, for children and families who are otherwise facing a Christmas with nothing.
Pauline Wonders the charity’s CEO comments:
“With all the excitement at Christmas it is easy to forget that there are local families out there who cannot afford decorations or even presents for children. For these families Christmas can be a bleak reminder of the challenges they face.”
“We support families in North and South Tyneside and Northumberland, who without your donations will have absolutely nothing this Christmas. We are therefore asking the generous local community to get behind this appeal and donate what you can to help light up Christmas for families who are struggling to make ends meet.”
If you’d like to support our Christmas appeal and find out how you can make a donation, then click here.
Family Gateway also accepts donations of non-perishable food, clothing, furniture and household items throughout the year. If you’d like to donate your good quality used items to help a family in need then get in touch.

Fundraise at Work
Family Gateway provides vital support to children and families living in poverty within our local communities.
But we can’t do it alone.
We need inspirational local companies across the North East to support our work through one-off fundraising activities or by choosing us as your charity of the year.
Company giving is a great way for your business to give back to the community, raise your profile locally, whilst bringing colleagues together for priceless teambuilding and fun!
There are so many ways you can raise funds for Family Gateway, but here are a few suggestions to get you started:
- Dress down Fridays
- Make a donation instead of sending company Christmas cards
- Hold a Pub Quiz
- Hold a coffee morning or cake sale in the office
- Sponsor our community centre
- Climb a mountain! Take on a team challenge like the 3 Peaks
Can’t decide which fundraising theme your colleagues would like? Why not create a charity committee at work, so you can get together and plan your favourite fundraising activities throughout the year!
Get in touch for further information on Fundraising for Family Gateway. No idea is too big or too small. Every penny makes a difference and we’d love to hear from you and your colleagues.
Corporate Charitable Donations
Would your company like to be part of a ground-breaking charity initiative?
Then why not ask us about Family Gateway’s new ‘Sponsor a Family Entrepreneur’ charity of the year scheme?
In 2018 Family Gateway will launch its first ever ‘Sponsor a Family Entrepreneur’ partnership appeal, and we’ll be asking for corporate charitable donations from local companies, to join us in helping to change the lives of local children and families living in poverty in the North East.
We are appealing for special companies who’d like take on a special challenge by partnering with Family Gateway and sponsoring one of our Outreach Support Entrepreneurs. Our Entrepreneurs are themselves local people who have experienced poverty and disadvantages, and have overcome difficult challenges. They are then trained and employed by Family Gateway and go back into the community to support hard-to-reach families struggling with similar challenges.
A Family Entrepreneur's Story
Diane was helped by Family Gateway and now works for the charity as a Family Entrepreneur, helping other children and families in the area.
“It is difficult for me to imagine where I would be if Family Gateway hadn’t come along. I was on benefits, had rent arrears, my son was refusing to go to school and getting into trouble with the police. I never went out or saw anyone and I guess now I would recognise this as social isolation.”
“Now I am a Family Entrepreneur and have been employed by Family Gateway for 3 years. When my Family Entrepreneur knocked on my door I refused to let her in and refused to accept I needed support. She was persistent though and then one day it was raining really hard and I took pity and let her in. What would have happened if I hadn’t, I don’t know. I suspect one of my sons would have ended up in prison, the youngest would have had no positive role model and I would be an alcoholic on my sofa!”
“Now I am a confident, independent single mother who has a great job and it is just great that I can now support others with the same or similar problems. My children now have aspirations for their future because seeing me going to work every day inspires them to want to get a job and earn money to provide for their young families. Additionally, I have learnt so much while working for Family Gateway that not only allows me to support my families to achieve the things they want to achieve but also enables me to guide my own family to the best outcomes for them.”
We are calling for companies to sponsor a future Family Entrepreneur and help people like Diane.
More information on this appeal will be available shortly, but if you’d like to find out more now and become our first ever sponsor, please contact Pauline today who’d love to chat.
