#CommunityCentreWeek  #loveyourcc

We’ve loved taking over the management and renovation of Howdon Community Centre. Renaming, rebranding and revitalising it, we’re proud that it’s our first (of many!) Community Hubs.

With dedicated staff and volunteers, we’re turning it into a fit-for-community-purpose building, capturing locals’ wants, needs and likes.

“The Hub’s goal is to be sustainable so we can give back to Family Gateway, supporting their work. I want to create an environment where people can come in for a chat, feel welcome, take part in activities and have fun!”

Run by local people, for local people

No one understands the problems and potential of a community quite like those who live there. It’s important to us that we deliver what is needed exactly where it’s wanted, which is why feedback and local knowledge is so essential to us. We immerse ourselves in the community so we can get the best from it.

Our gardens grow fruit and vegetables for use in our onsite café, Howdelicious, and the local people are welcome to come along and have a taste of them!

We couldn’t keep the centre running without our fantastic volunteers. Income from our community enterprises helps us to provide employment and volunteering opportunities for local people. We invest in their training and development in areas such as catering (linked to our community café).

“We appreciate everything our volunteers do, from helping in the kitchen, garden and gym to running a fundraising group and assisting at Howdon Hub’s events!”

Reducing social isolation

We want Howdon Hub to be a place where everyone can meet – all ages, all backgrounds, all cultures. Over 1000 local people visit us every month for the gym, exercise classes, youth clubs, playgroups, parties, having food and drink, buying from The Exchange, or making use of our fantastic outdoor area.

Every school holiday sees us putting on multiple weekly activities, not only to keep the kids occupied but also for the parents. What better way to meet and socialise with other adults in the same ‘surviving the holidays’ boat! Not only that, but each term time week we have over 40 activities on.

What next?

Our renovations to the reception and café area start in Autumn so your brand new and improved Hub will be coming soon! We’re adding lots more space for enterprises and training.

We’re also launching new youth groups and socialising opportunities – there’s always loads going on so be sure to check our activity timetable for monthly updates.
