Tyne Gateway Trust has recently been awarded the Charity Times Charity of the Year 2016 (income of less than £1m) award at a glittering ceremony in London. Having won the Charity Times Best New Charity Award back in 2012, the staff team decided to apply again in a different category to show how far they have come.
The organisation provides whole family support to vulnerable families in the most disadvantaged communities across North Tyneside, South Tyneside and South East Northumberland, with the aim of improving life chances for children. It employs local people who have themselves experience similar issues and they then engage those whom other services cannot reach and go on to provide credible, practical and non-authoritative support. The Charity Times panel described Tyne Gateway as ‘a charity with a laser focus on their service users’.
Pauline Wonders, Strategic Director of the charity, said: “I am so delighted to have won this national award; it is such a huge thing for us and recognises the very challenging job that our amazing staff do. Our job would be much more difficult without the fantastic support and relationships we have with our colleagues in North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Northumberland and we look forward to continuing our great work here and further afield.”
